Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the morphology of the root canals of the lower premolars using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) according to Vertucci's FJclassification (1984) and verify the relationship with sex, age and side of the dental arch. Methods: The tomographic images were selected according to eligibility criteria and evaluated through axial, coronal and sagittal reconstructions in the CS 3D Imaging® program. When no Vertucci FJ (1984)classification was applied, type 0 was defined for statistical analysis. The data were tabulated in Excel and analyzed in SPSS, using Fischer's exact test at a significance level of 5%. Results: The final sample included 530 teeth, with 277 (52.3%) from female patients and 253 (47.7%) from male patients. Regarding age group, 95.5% (n=506) were adults. Of the teeth, 50.4% (n=267) belonged to the left arch. Type II was the most common, followed by types I and III. There were no significant differences between type of canal, age, sex or side of the dental arch. Conclusion: Anatomical variations indicate that endodontic treatment of lower premolars is complex. The uniformity of root canal patterns, regardless of sex, age or side of the arch, was observed.
