Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the relationship between the risk of hypoxemia in patients undergoing orotracheal intubation using the rapid sequence method and the use of preoxygenation with noninvasive ventilation as a prevention tool. Methods: Integrative literature review, which used the electronic database PubMed Central (PMC). The search terms included “Noninvasive Ventilation”, “Preoxygenation”, “Hypoxemia” from 2019 to 2024. After applying the search strategy, 594 articles were found, and a total of 13 articles were selected for detailed analysis. Results: The results showed better outcomes in adult patients preoxygenated with noninvasive ventilation undergoing rapid sequence orotracheal intubation. Comparative studies on the implementation of new associated ventilation devices, such as CNHF, COT and HFNC - in the procedure discussed - have still shown little conclusiveness regarding an increase in the improvement of these outcomes. Final considerations: The importance of individualizing therapy for each group of patients is highlighted, which should be carried out according to the pathologies and comorbidities. This will make it possible to define the most effective tool for preventing hypoxemia related to the orotracheal intubation procedure.
