Abstract

Objective: To identify the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among heart failure patients under outpatient follow-up at a referral unit in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional, exploratory, and observational study with a non-probabilistic convenience sample was conducted in Recife, Pernambuco, from April to June 2018. Data collection included the application of a specific instrument as well as blood sample collection and analysis. The diagnosis of metabolic syndrome followed the Brazilian criteria established by the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism and the National Cholesterol Education Program. Results: A total of 110 patients were evaluated, 65.5% (n: 72) of whom were male, with a mean age of 59±13 years. The frequency of metabolic syndrome was 29% (n: 32), showing significant correlations with age (p<0.020), sex (p<0.018), hypertension (p<0.035), and diabetes mellitus (p<0.001). Conclusion: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was significant and associated with factors such as age, sex, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. The findings highlight the need for screening and integrated management. Specific strategies could improve the prognosis for these patients.
