Abstract

Objective: The aim is to detect information in the cientific literature on actions in hospital dentistry for the prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) to stimulate evidence-based practice (EBP) regarding the control of oral biofilm for the prevention of VAP. Methods: The present work is an integrative literature review, in which scientific articles available in the Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS) were searched until November 2024, using the filters “full text”, “last 10 years”, in Portuguese and English languages. The descriptors and strategy “oral biofilm AND hospital infection AND pneumonia” were used. Results: 19 articles were found in the BVS. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, six articles were evaluated in full and included in the present study. It was observed that all the included articles presented conducts in hospital dentistry for the prevention of VAP, promoting EBP regarding the control of oral biofilm for the prevention of VAP. Final considerations: Hospital dentistry allows the implementation of specific care to control oral biofilm in hospitalized individuals, which contributes to the reduction of oral microbial proliferation and consequent prevention of VAP.
