Abstract
Objective: To assess ICU professionals' adherence to the oral preventive measures protocol in a paediatric hospital. Methods: Prospective cohort in which 152 children were submitted to the protocol. The variables were: gender, age group, origin, diagnosis, outcome, adherence to the protocol and oral lesions. The application of the protocol at patient admission and discharge was recorded in a questionnaire. Results: The majority of patients were male (61.2 %). The predominant age group was under 1 year old (43.4%). 90.6% had used mechanical ventilation. Adherence to the protocol was higher when patients left the hospital compared to when they were admitted (p=0.001). Clinical improvement was observed in periodontal changes, mucosal lesions and bleeding. Conclusion: This protocol contributes to the clinical improvement of oral lesions in hospitalised children. In addition, the presence of the dental surgeon in the ICU and the systematisation of the protocol proved to be essential elements in promoting staff adherence and motivation.
