Abstract
Objective: To describe the epidemiological profile of patients hospitalized for ophthalmological emergencies in Brazil from 2018 to 2022. Methods: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study, carried out through DATASUS. The years 2018 to 2022 were selected, restricting the nature of care to “Emergency” and restricting the ICD-10 chapter to “Diseases of the eye and appendages”. The following variables were used: number of hospitalizations, age group 1, sex, color/race, year of treatment and region of residence. Results: It was possible to observe a total of 85,439 emergency visits for diseases of the eye and its appendages between 2018 and 2022, in Brazil. The year with the highest number of consultations was 2022, which saw 19,957 (23.3%) consultations. The most prevalent age group was 60 to 69 years old (21.8% of cases). The most affected sex was male, with 48,465 cases. The brown color/race had the highest number of cases (9,726). The Southeast region had the highest total number of hospitalizations (48.2%). Conclusion: Therefore, in patients treated for ophthalmological emergencies in Brazil from 2018 to 2022, a higher prevalence was observed in the age group of 60 to 69 years, in males, mixed race and residents of the Southeast region.
