Abstract
Objective: To analyze the current literature on the dynamics of bacterial colonies with in the periodontal pocket and on the cementum and root dentin. Bibliographic review: The review revealed that the subgingival bacterial biofilm is highly organized, containing species such as Porphyromonasgingivalis, Treponema denticola and Tannerellaforsythia. These microorganisms are favored by anaerobic conditions, especially in periodontal pockets, where the host'simmune response is insuficiente to contain inflammation. This biofilm aderes to the rough surfaces of the root cementum and areas of resorption, making it difficult to remove and favoring the release of endotoxins and acids that damage the cementumand root dentin. Fur ther more, its heterogeneous structure, composed of diferente bacterial forms, contributes to the progression of periodontitis. Final considerations: Understanding the interaction between biofilm and periodontal tissues is essential to create more effective therapies, as well as to improve the prognosis and prevent periodontal disease.
