Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical and epidemiological profile of cirrhotic patients with non-elective hospitalizations at Fundação Santa Casa de Misericórdia do Pará. Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted based on the analysis of electronic hospital records of patients admitted between April 2024 and September 2024 in a Reference Hospital. Results: A total of 54 hospitalizations were analyzed, with most patients having a prior diagnosis of liver cirrhosis (N=38/54, 70%). The main cause of liver cirrhosis was alcohol-related (48%), followed by non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (22%) and chronic Hepatitis C virus infection (17%). Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) was diagnosed in 20% of patients (N=11/54), with a significantly higher mortality rate compared to patients without this diagnosis (73% vs. 5%, p<0.001). Patients with ACLF also had a greater need for ICU admission, blood component transfusion, and endotracheal intubation. Moreover, the study showed that the MELD-NA score did not differ between patients who died and those who were discharged from the hospital. Conclusion: In conclusion, this study reaffirms the severity of the disease and reinforces the validity of prognostic scores, particularly the CLIF-ACLF, in this patient population.
