Abstract

Objective: Describe the relationship between plant-based diets and the modulation of the intestinal microbiota, highlighting its effects on microbial diversification, metabolism and immune response. Methods: In this integrative review, the PubMed database was consulted to identify and select studies published between 2020 and 2025. The descriptors used included "plant-based diet" and "gut microbiota." Inclusion criteria included studies with experimental designs and systematic reviews that evaluated the influence of plant-based diets on the intestinal microbiota. Results: Eleven articles that met the review's inclusion and exclusion criteria were included, which examined the interactions between plant-based dietary interventions and the analysis of their gut microbiome, demonstrating how these diets can influence the composition and functionality of the human gut microbiome. Conclusion: Plant-based diets promote a more diverse and functional gut microbiome, associated with lower risks of inflammatory and metabolic diseases. However, there needs to be more research to elucidate the mechanisms involved in these changes.
