Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of photobiomodulation in the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis in cancer patients. Methods: This is an integrative literature review conducted through a search in the PubMed database, including articles published between 2013 and 2023, in English and Portuguese. The following health descriptors were used: low-level light therapy, stomatitis, mucositis and oncology. After applying eligibility criteria, 966 articles were initially identified. Of these, 66 were selected based on title and abstract analysis. After a thorough full-text review, 18 studies met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. Results: The included studies indicate that photobiomodulation is effective in reducing the severity, duration, and incidence of oral mucositis induced by chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy, contributing to improved quality of life for patients. Final considerations: Photobiomodulation is a safe, non-invasive, and promising therapeutic strategy for managing oral mucositis. Its use should be encouraged within a multidisciplinary approach, significantly contributing to the comprehensive care of cancer patients.
