Abstract
Objective: To assess body image perception among medical students. Methods: Observational study conducted with medical students from a university in southern Santa Catarina. Data were collected using the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ), which measures negative body image perception. Students from different stages of the course were included, with no age or gender restrictions. Results: A total of 402 students participated, with a mean age of 22.68 years. The mean BSQ score was 90.30. Among participants, 52.62% showed body dissatisfaction (≥80 points), more prevalent among women. Social media use and consumption of appearance-related content were higher among dissatisfied students, who also engaged in weight-loss-oriented exercise and followed restrictive diets. Students with normal concern showed moderate use of social media. Conclusion: Body dissatisfaction is common among medical students, especially women, and is associated with intensive use of social media. These findings highlight the importance of educational strategies aimed at mental health and critical media use.
