Abstract

Objective: To correlate the type of femoral fracture (open or closed) with the outcome of nonunion in patients treated at a public teaching hospital specialized in orthopedics and traumatology in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted with 38 medical records of adult patients hospitalized between March 2023 and June 2024, diagnosed with distal femoral fracture (open or closed). Results: Most patients were ≥20 years old (86.8%; 95%CI: 73.5–94.8), with a mean age of 32.9 years (95%CI: 29.3–36.5), predominantly male (84.2%; 95%CI: 70.3–93.1), non-diabetic (92.1%; 95%CI: 80.4–97.7), and non-smokers (52.6%; 95%CI: 37.1–67.8). Fractures occurred mainly on the right side (94.7%; 95%CI: 84.2–98.9), were open in 71.1% (95%CI: 55.5–83.5), and most frequently classified as AO 33C3 (42.1%) and AO 33C2 (26.3%). Most patients did not progress to nonunion (71.1%), although 81.8% required reoperation. Locked plating was the predominant treatment (71.8%). No association was found with sex (p=0.796), but age group showed significant association with nonunion (p=0.007; adjusted p=0.024). Conclusion: Age significantly influenced the occurrence of nonunion, while sex showed no association. Locked plating was the predominant treatment, standing out in recovery.
