Abstract

Objective: To estimate the rates of gestational and congenital syphilis in a macro-region of Santa Catarina and investigate associated factors, as well as weaknesses in prenatal care. Methods: Historical cohort study conducted between 2017 and 2019, using linkage of different databases of Health Information Systems related to health problems, births, and deaths. Odds ratios (OR) were estimated using a logistic regression model, considering a significance level of 5%. Results: The incidence rate of gestational syphilis ranged from 14.8 to 16.4 cases per 1,000 live births. The incidence of congenital syphilis ranged from 4.3 to 5.8 per 1,000 live births. The occurrence of congenital syphilis was associated with late maternal diagnosis (OR=2.87; 95% CI=1.09-7.57) and inadequate treatment of the pregnant woman (OR=4.60; 95% CI=1.29-16.37), highlighting weaknesses in prenatal care. Conclusion: The rates of gestational and congenital syphilis were similar to national estimates. Early diagnosis combined with timely and adequate treatment of the pregnant woman are essential factors for reducing vertical transmission and improving the quality of maternal and child care.
