Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) and cardiometabolic risk in patients with noncommunicable chronic diseases (NCDs) treated at a teaching hospital. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study involving patients of both sexes, aged between 20 and 75 years, seen at the Nutrition Outpatient Clinic of the Instituto de Medicina Integral Professor Fernando Figueira (IMIP), located in Recife, Brazil, from May to October 2022. Clinical, socioeconomic, anthropometric, and dietary intake data were collected. Results: A total of 47 patients were evaluated, with a mean age of 52.29 ± 10.68 years. Excess weight according to BMI was observed in 91.5% of individuals. Based on waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), cardiometabolic risk was identified in 93.6% and 100% of participants, respectively. No statistically significant association was found between the DII and socioeconomic or clinical variables; however, a negative correlation between DII and WHtR was observed (p = 0.028). Conclusion: The study population showed a predominance of excess weight and a pro-inflammatory dietary pattern, highlighting the importance of targeted nutritional follow-up for the prevention and control of overweight.
