Abstract

Objective: To analyze the quality of life and respiratory muscle strength (RMS) of patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) attending a physiotherapy school clinic. Methods: This quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional field study analyzed the medical records of 9 PD patients, both male and female, aged 56 to 79 years. Quality of life and RMS were assessed before and after participation in an extension project, which included group physiotherapy sessions twice weekly over three months. Data were collected using the PDQ-39 questionnaire and manovacuometry and analyzed with descriptive statistics, considering a significance level of p<0.05. Results: Improvements in quality of life and RMS were observed, with increases in the mean and median values of PImax (p=0.13) and PEmax (p=0.02), as well as reductions in PDQ-39 scores (p=0.03). Conclusion: This study is unprecedented in correlating quality of life and RMS in PD patients. The findings indicate positive effects of physiotherapy interventions on these variables. The main limitation was the small sample size; however, the results highlight potential benefits for respiratory function, functional capacity, and overall quality of life.
