Abstract

Objective: To analyze the epidemiological profile of hospitalizations and deaths due to femur fractures in elderly individuals in the state of Paraíba. Methods: This is an observational study, with a descriptive approach to secondary data extracted from the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS). The distribution of cases of hospitalizations and deaths due to femur fractures in elderly individuals was verified according to sex, age group, and race/color, in addition to the values of hospital services and average cost of hospitalization, between the years 2014 and 2025. A descriptive analysis of the data was performed, which were included in tables and trend graphs. Results: A total of 10.948 hospitalizations were observed, with an increasing trend (7.4% per year), predominantly women (72.8%), elderly individuals ≥ 80 years (51.6%), and mixed-race individuals (76.6%). Deaths totaled 366 cases, with higher mortality rates among the elderly (4.75%) and indigenous populations (16.67%). The total cost was approximately R$ 22 million, with an average of R$ 2,068.85 per hospitalization and an average length of stay of 6.9 days. Conclusion: This scenario requires greater investment in preventive activities targeted at the different contexts of the affected subgroups (women, mixed-race individuals, very old elderly, and indigenous people).
