Abstract

Objective: To analyze the evolution of kidney transplants performed in Brazil between 2013 and 2023, based on data provided by the National Transplant System (NST). Methods: This is a quantitative, descriptive, and documentary study using secondary data from the SNT, referring to kidney transplants carried out in Brazil between 2013 and 2023. The information was organized and analyzed through descriptive statistics, considering the categories of living and deceased donors. Results: During the analyzed period, 61,185 kidney transplants were performed in Brazil, with 50,653 (82.8%) from deceased donors and 10,532 (17.2%) from living donors. A growth trend was observed until 2019, followed by a significant decline in 2020–2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and recovery from 2022 onward. The deceased donor modality proved to be more stable and less susceptible to external fluctuations, while living donor transplants showed greater annual variation. Conclusion: Brazil maintains a consolidated and expanding kidney transplant system, with a predominance of post-mortem donation. It is recommended to strengthen public policies that expand living donation and ensure the continuity of transplants during health crises.
