Abstract

Objective: To analyze the clinical and epidemiological profile of patients who underwent intragastric balloon (IGB) placement in a reference hospital in Northern Brazil between 2019 and 2024. Methods: Observational, retrospective, descriptive, and analytical study conducted through the review of electronic medical records in the Endoscopy Service of a hospital in Belém, Pará. Patients of both sexes, aged ≥18 years, with complete records and a minimum follow-up of six months were included. Sociodemographic, clinical, and anthropometric variables were analyzed using Microsoft® Excel® 2016 and BioEstat 5.4 software. Chi-square, G-test for goodness of fit, paired Student’s t-test, and Kruskal-Wallis tests were applied, with α = 0.05. Results: The sample comprised 73 patients, predominantly women (60.3%), with a mean age of 39.8 years. The mean weight loss was 19.2 kg (11.2%) with a significant reduction in BMI (p < 0.0001). Complications were rare, mainly nausea and abdominal pain. Multidisciplinary follow-up occurred in 97.3% of cases, primarily involving Nutrition, Psychology, and Endocrinology. Conclusion: The IGB proved to be safe and effective, with a low complication rate and clinically relevant weight loss outcomes, enhanced by adherence to multidisciplinary follow-up.
