Abstract
Objective: To analyze temporal trends in child mortality due to traffic accidents in Brazil according to sex, age group, place and region of occurrence, victim category, and type of traffic accident from 2013 to 2023. Methods: An epidemiological time-series study using data from the Mortality Information System and population projections from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. Deaths of children aged 0–9 years classified as traffic accidents according to the ICD were included. Mortality rates were calculated and analyzed using Joinpoint regression. Results: A total of 7,386 child deaths were recorded during the period. Most victims were male (57.9%), aged 5–9 years (47.3%), and of mixed race/skin color (51.0%). Deaths occurred mainly on public roads (48.5%) and in hospitals (38.6%). The Southeast Region showed the highest mortality rates, although the North and South Regions also presented elevated levels. Accidents involving pedestrians (32.2%) and car occupants (35.2%) predominated. An average annual reduction of 6.6% (95% CI: -8.10; -5.51) was observed, with a decline of 10.3% among pedestrians and 6.0% among car occupants. Conclusion: Despite the overall reduction in child traffic mortality, regional and sociodemographic inequalities persist.
