Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the impact of the number of individuals with chromosomal abnormalities on public spending in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) in its macro-regions between 2008 and 2024. Methods: The study adopted a quantitative, ecological-observational, retrospective, and analytical approach, with data extracted from the TABNET website. Results: It was observed that the region with the highest expenditure in the stipulated period was the Southeast, with an annual average of R$34,255.88 among all patients with chromosomal abnormalities, almost half the Brazilian average for the same period, which was R$75,840. In descending order of values, the Northeast, South, Central-West, and North regions had averages of R$18,577.25, R$13,144.96, R$5,613.16, and R$5,208.98, respectively. This study corroborates other Brazilian studies on the subject. The differences observed between regions can be explained by several structural and healthcare factors. The heterogeneous coverage of epidemiological surveillance systems and regional inequalities may influence the underestimation of healthcare demands. Conclusion: It is possible to affirm that the costs associated with patients with chromosomal abnormalities have a significant impact on public health expenditures within the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS).
