Abstract
Objective: To identify the epidemiological and clinical profile of patients hospitalized for heart failure in a hospital in Paraíba, Brazil. Method: A retrospective, descriptive and quantitative study was based on secondary data from DATASUS and SIH/SUS. Data collected included sex, age, race, hospitalization period, type of care, number of deaths and mortality rate, length of stay and hospital costs. . Data were analyzed from December 2024 to November 2025. Results: The highest prevalence for heart failure was observed in men (55.4%), older adults (80.7%), and individuals identified as mixed race (99.5%). The mean length of hospital stay was prolonged (10.7 days). Most admissions were classified as emergency care (99.5%). Mortality was higher among patients aged over 70 years (68%), resulting in substantial annual hospital costs (R$ 528,011.48). Conclusion: Heart failure represented a significant healthcare burden at the analyzed hospital, with a predominance among older adults, particularly in the most advanced age groups. This scenario posing a challenge to public health policies aimed at developing strategies for risk factor control, early detection, and the reduction of economic impacts.
