Abstract
Objective: To analyze the impact of oral health on the quality of life of patients with chronic diseases, with an emphasis on the relationship between periodontitis, diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Literature review: The literature shows that oral health is closely associated with general health, with periodontitis being a chronic inflammatory condition that contributes to adverse metabolic and cardiovascular outcomes. Studies show that periodontal treatment improves glycemic control in individuals with diabetes and is associated with a reduction in systemic inflammatory markers. Furthermore, there is robust evidence of a relationship between periodontitis and hypertension, ischemic heart disease, and even some types of cancer. In addition to biological factors, socioeconomic and behavioral variables influence oral health-related quality of life. Final considerations: The integration of dental care into healthcare networks is essential, strengthening the multidisciplinary approach and promoting improved quality of life in patients with chronic diseases.
