Abstract
Objective: To review the current scientific literature on the protocols used in the management of newborns with Edwards syndrome in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), with emphasis on the main clinical care practices and the challenges encountered. Literature review: Studies show that Edwards syndrome is associated with high neonatal morbidity and mortality, mainly due to respiratory and cardiovascular complications. Management in the NICU requires individualized assessment, continuous monitoring, and intensive support, particularly in the management of respiratory failure, congenital heart defects, and neonatal sepsis. The relevance of a multidisciplinary approach is highlighted, as well as the integration between intensive and palliative care and the provision of psychological support to families. Conclusion: Although there is no single protocol applicable to all neonates with Trisomy 18, recent evidence provides guidelines that support clinical decision-making by healthcare teams, contributing to greater clinical stability and the potential improvement of these patients’ quality of life.
