Abstract

Objective: To compare the Knoop microhardness of conventional nanoparticulate resins and bulk fill. Methods: 10 cylindrical samples (6mm x 4mm) of each resin were made. For the Filtek Z350XT resin, LED photocuring (1200 mW/cm2) occurred at every 2mm increment, and for the Filtek One Bulk Fill resin, at 4mm total, for 20s. Both surfaces of the samples were sanded with 400>600>1200 water sandpaper and evaluated for Knoop microhardness. Then, they were thermocycled until 10,000 cycles were obtained, ranging from 5ºC to 55ºC. After thermocycling, the Knoop microhardness was reassessed. Data were submitted to ANOVA 2 criteria of repeated measures and Tukey's test (ⲁ = 0.05). Results: The bulk fill resin showed the lowest microhardness on both surfaces, before and after thermocycling, when compared to the conventional resin (p > 0.05). Thermocycling did not induce any change in microhardness (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The bulk fill resin showed lower microhardness than the conventional nanoparticulate resin, being more susceptible to fatigue, fracture, and wear.
