Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of probiotic supplementation in reducing chronic pain in patients undergoing bariatric surgery, compared to placebo or no intervention. Methods: This is a systematic literature review, with searches conducted in databases such as PubMed, BVS, Science Direct, and EbscoHost, including published studies on the use of probiotics in the postoperative period of bariatric surgery. Randomized clinical trials and observational studies addressing gastrointestinal symptoms, gut microbiota, and metabolic outcomes were included. Results: The analyzed studies demonstrated that probiotic supplementation is associated with a reduction in gastrointestinal symptoms, such as abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea, as well as improved quality of life. Positive effects were also observed in the modulation of the gut microbiota and in metabolic parameters, such as glycemic control and vitamin levels, although with variations between interventions. Final considerations: Probiotics show potential benefit in managing pain and gastrointestinal symptoms after bariatric surgery. However, the heterogeneity of the studies limits the generalization of the results, and more robust studies are needed.
