Abstract

Objective: To investigate whether there is a relationship between exposure to pesticides and autism spectrum disorder. Methodos: This study was followed by an integrative literature review, exploring articles published between 2020 and 2024 in the CAPES Periodicals databases, using descriptors such as “pesticides” and “autism spectrum disorder,” and included 10 of the 102 initially selected studies, all in English and with open access. Results: The research suggests a link between exposure to pesticides and an increased risk of ASD, mainly due to the neurotoxic effects of certain classes of pesticides. However, other factors, including genetic susceptibility and nutritional conditions, may also influence this relationship. Final considerations: Although the results are still inconclusive, prenatal exposure to pesticides tends to increase vulnerability to ASD, highlighting the need for further epidemiological research to support more effective and preventive public health policies.
