Abstract
Objective: To analyze the evidence regarding the incorporation of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols in breast reconstruction procedures. Literature review: ERAS protocols have been widely incorporated into modern surgical practice, aiming to reduce the physiological stress of the procedure, accelerate postoperative recovery, and improve clinical outcomes. These protocols are based on a perioperative care approach and applied in various specialties, including breast reconstruction. Divided into pre-, peri-, and postoperative procedures, these elements range from patient preparation and education to multimodal analgesia strategies, fluid control, early mobilization, and post-discharge support, reflecting a comprehensive approach to perioperative care. Final considerations: ERAS protocols constitute an effective and safe strategy for perioperative management in breast reconstruction, promoting faster recovery, reduced hospital stay, lower opioid consumption, and improved patient experience. The observed benefits appear to stem from the integration of multiple interventions throughout the entire continuum of care, reinforcing the importance of overall adherence to the protocol and multidisciplinary action. The results suggest a positive impact on the efficiency of health systems, with potential for cost reduction and better allocation of resources.
