Abstract

Objective: To understand the perceptions of nursing residents regarding "total pain" in oncological palliative care and the role of spirituality as a coping strategy, viewed through the lens of Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology. Methods: A descriptive-exploratory qualitative study was conducted with 20 nursing residents at the National Cancer Institute, a specialized center for high-complexity cancer care linked to the Ministry of Health in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Data collection took place between August and December 2022 using semi-structured, phenomenological interviews. Analysis followed Amedeo Giorgi’s method. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: Findings were organized into two categories: limitations in training and the management of total pain; and spirituality as a strategy for coping with physical, emotional, social, and existential suffering. From the residents' perspective, spirituality emerged as an essential element in coping with total pain, providing emotional and existential support for professionals involved in oncological palliative care. Conclusion: The research highlighted the challenges faced by nursing residents regarding total pain in oncological palliative care. It underscores the need for strategies that strengthen these professionals' knowledge, training, and continuous learning, thereby contributing to a more humanized and holistic practice.
