Abstract

Objective: To analyze the scientific evidence on the use of laboratory triggers for the detection of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in hospitalized pediatric patients, identifying the main biomarkers, their applications, and their contributions to active pharmacovigilance. Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO, Google Scholar, including studies published between 2021 and 2026. The search strategy employed MeSH and DeCS descriptors combined with the Boolean operators AND and OR. Studies were selected according to predefined eligibility criteria and analyzed using descriptive and narrative synthesis. Results: Twenty-one studies were included. Laboratory triggers based on hepatic, renal, hematological, and metabolic biomarkers predominated for the early detection of ADRs. Some studies described the integration of these triggers with trigger tools, electronic health records, and computerized clinical decision support systems, enhancing medication safety monitoring in hospitalized pediatric patients. Final considerations: Laboratory triggers are valuable tools for the early detection of ADRs and for strengthening active pharmacovigilance. However, the heterogeneity of biomarkers and the criteria adopted highlights the need for greater standardization to expand their application in clinical practice.
