Abstract

Objective: To examine the effects of a physical therapy intervention protocol on individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, in which SF-36 domains were analyzed separately and functional capacity was the primary outcome. Methods: This is a single-group, longitudinal, quasi-experimental study with pre- and post-intervention assessment. Participants underwent 15 physiotherapy sessions twice a week, with an average duration of 60 minutes, at the Physiotherapy Clinic of the University of Passo Fundo, Passo Fundo/RS, Brazil. The protocol was based on kinesiotherapy, including global and functional exercises. Initial and final assessments involved sociodemographic data collection and application of the Medical Outcomes Study 36 – Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). Results: Ten individuals completed the study, with a mean age of 58.50 years, predominantly female and White. Improvements in quality of life and functional capacity were observed after the physiotherapeutic intervention, with statistically significant results. Conclusion: A statistically significant improvement was observed only in the functional capacity domain of the SF-36 intervention protocol based on kinesiotherapy proved effective in improving the quality of life and functional capacity of individuals with rheumatoid arthritis. The small sample size stands out as a study limitation.
