Abstract

Objective: To classify the self-care agency of adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) assisted at a public outpatient clinic in Manaus, Amazonas. Method: A cross-sectional, descriptive, and quantitative study conducted between January and April 2023 with 150 adults with T2DM. A sociodemographic questionnaire and an adapted version of the Self-Care Assessment Instrument for Type 2 Diabetic Patients (INAAP-DM2) were used, categorizing self-care into three nursing system levels: Wholly Compensatory, Partly Compensatory, and Supportive-Educative. The study received ethical approval under CAAE protocol 65665622.5.0000.5020. Results: A total of 150 individuals participated (20.66% female and 16.66% male). Regarding self-care agency, 96% of participants were classified into the Supportive-Educative level, 4% into the Partly Compensatory level, and none into the Wholly Compensatory level. No statistically significant correlation was observed among the evaluated sociodemographic parameters. Conclusion: The predominance of the Supportive-Educative level highlights the urgent need to strengthen health education interventions focused on medication adherence and insulin therapy. Furthermore, it underscores the importance of continuing education for the multidisciplinary healthcare team to engage patients, prevent chronic complications, and improve quality of life.
