Abstract

Objective: This study aims to review the literature on maxillary disjunction assisted by mini-implants in adult patients. Methods: Through literature review, published scientific articles were researched and selected related to maxillary orthopedic expansion and mini-implant assisted maxillary expansion. Review: Rapid maxillary expansion is the technique for correction of transverse discrepancies. It is performed by the rupture of the medial palatine suture, increasing the perimeter of the arch and rapidly remodeling through the repair of the connective tissue and bone formation. This method has since been performed as an effective and routine form in today's orthodontic practices. With the advent of skeletal anchorage, it was possible to develop the anchorage process by mini-implants associated with Rapid Maxilla Expansion (MARPE).MARPE increases the effects of maxillary disjunction because the force of expansion is applied only to the skeletal level, due to the anchorage located in the palatal bone base, demonstrating results of gradual orthopedic movement and decreasing dental sequelae. Final considerations:With the use of MARPE, the correction of transverse deficiencies in young adult individuals is facilitated, reducing periodontal impairments and undesirable dentoalveolar inclinations.
