Abstract
Objective: To verify the number of maternal deaths and their main causes that occurred in a reference hospital in the state of Pará and compare these data with national indicators. Methods: Hospital data were obtained from the institution's Maternal Death Assessment Forms, while national data were collected through the DATASUS Mortality Information System (SIM). All maternal deaths registered in the period from January 2011 to December 2018, due to direct, indirect or unspecified causes were included. Results: Direct Maternal Deaths were the most prevalent causes of Maternal Death in the hospital, corresponding to 63.5% of all deaths over the period studied. Among these, those resulting from infectious causes were the most statistically significant (24.66%). National data were discrepant, with a predominance of causes related to hypertensive conditions (mean of 19.43%). Conclusion: The prevalence of Direct Maternal Deaths from infectious causes in the reference hospital in Pará points to the need for efforts to reduce intra- and extra-hospital infections. It is also suggested that further studies be carried out on this topic that can detail such infectious causes not discussed in depth in this work and other causal factors of maternal death.
