Abstract
Objective: To describe, through scientific studies, the main lines of treatment with antimicrobials for early and late sepsis in the newborn. Methods: The present study is characterized as an integrative literature review with a descriptive qualitative approach. Thirteen articles related to the theme of neonatal sepsis and antibiotic therapy reported in each study were selected. Results: Neonatal sepsis is classified as early and late, since the first is related to the peri-partum period and its risks of contamination and the second due to care factors within a hospital that lead to infection. Ampicillin and gentamicin appeared significantly in the empirical treatment of early neonatal sepsis, although other studies in hospitals have used others as the first choice. In the case of late neonatal sepsis, treatment was given with oxacillin, amikacin, vancomycin, meropenem, cefepime, amoxzng others that present good results in view of the result of blood culture related to the microorganism and their sensitivities. Final considerations: neonatal sepsis is a worldwide problem related to the gestational period or hospital care, it can often be avoided and treated without leaving sequels in the individual. However, knowledge regarding the main medications and correct forms of use is of paramount importance for the newborn.
