Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical, laboratory and sociodemographic characteristics involved in the diagnosis and treatment of newborns, children and adolescents with Congenital Hypothyroidism (CH). Methods: This is a cross-sectional, documentary, retrospective study with a quantitative approach. The research population includes individuals undergoing neonatal screening at Association of Parents and Friends of the Exceptional (APAE) in a city in the state of Goiás and diagnosed with HC, from 2016 to 2021. After a favorable opinion from the CEP, data collection included the coding and identification of medical records, recording of data collected and data tabulation. Results: 102 medical records of patients diagnosed between 2016 and 2021 were analyzed, 64 of which were female, with Thyroid-stimulating Hormone (TSH) values greater than 20 mIU/mL. It was seen that most patients were asymptomatic, however, when present, the most common symptoms were: prolonged neonatal jaundice, lethargy and constipation. Conclusion: The study showed that the predominant maternal age was 20 to 40 years and that most patients with CH are female, born at term, with adequate weight, asymptomatic at birth and who are on regular treatment with Levothyroxine.
