Abstract

Objective: To identify and synthesize the available scientific knowledge regarding the presence of a risk correlation between the previous performance of a vasectomy and the development of malignant prostate neoplasms. Methods: A integrative literature review was carried out through studies found in the Medline database using the descriptors “Vasectomy” and “Prostatic Neoplasms” combined by the Boolean operator “AND”. As inclusion criteria, articles published in the time frame between 2012 and 2022, available in their full version in English and Portuguese and which answered the guiding question of the study, were included. Results: Based on 9 scientific articles analyzed, a divergence in the findings was identified, but the predominance of studies ruled out the connection between vasectomy and the development of prostate cancer. Conclusion: There is no definitive evidence to conclude the existence of an association between having a vasectomy and the development of prostate cancer. Thus, the urologist should not rule out the use of vasectomy as a long-term contraceptive measure and also should not consider its previous performance in the diagnosis of prostate cancer.
