Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the quality of life of children and adolescents with congenital heart disease with univentricular physiology after the Fontan operation. Methods: The cardiac module of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory TM (PedsQLTM 3.0) questionnaire was applied to individuals aged between 8 and 18 years who had undergone the Fontan operation. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was performed using Fisher's exact, unpaired t and Mann-Whitney tests. An alpha error of 5% was admitted. Results: The questionnaire was applied to 10 individuals with the Fontan operation and to 27 without heart disease (control group). The overall mean age was 12.7 years. Reduced quality of life was generally detected in the Fontan group compared to the control. Highlight for the axis that evaluated self-image and appearance before society in which very close scores were obtained and, in some criteria, even higher for the Control group. The excessive use of difficult-to-handle anticoagulants in the Fontan group is also relevant. Conclusion: The quality of life of children and adolescents with congenital heart diseases of univentricular physiology after the Fontan operation was reduced and measures at the multidisciplinary level can be improved in order to have a positive impact in general.
