Abstract

Objective: To analyze the color stability of teeth submitted to the tooth whitening technique. Bibliographic review: Several factors can affect the aesthetics of a smile, one of the most worrying for individuals is the darkening or yellowing of the teeth. Seeking tooth whitening has become a routine in dental offices, and a common question from patients is about the duration of treatment. Extrinsic and intrinsic factors can lead to changes in tooth color, which can be observed in different individuals. Extrinsic stains come mainly from the diet after tooth eruption and are the result of dyes and pigments deposited in the plaque that covers the enamel. Intrinsic ones can be caused by pre-exanthematic or post-exanthematic phenomena, whether of natural or physiological origin, excessive intake of certain medications, or internal bleeding due to dental trauma. Final Considerations: It is concluded that a literature review suggests that bleaching is a safe and effective procedure if indicated and performed properly, but it has advantages and disadvantages, and it is important to inform patients about possible color recurrence, possible estimates of the duration of bleaching and factors influencing it.
