Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the level of knowledge of the lay public and academics of Dentistry, Medicine, Physiotherapy and Nursing at the Federal University of Amazonas about the performance of the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Methods: This is an observational, cross-sectional epidemiological study with a quantitative approach, through the use of self-administered questionnaires, both in person and online, prepared by the researchers themselves. After collecting and tabulating the questionnaires in a database, descriptive analysis methods were applied, with calculation of frequencies and measures of position and variability to verify the difference between proportions. Results: The lay public and Nursing students were classified as having a poor level of knowledge about the specialty, Physiotherapy and Dentistry students had regular knowledge and Medical students had a good level of knowledge. Conclusion: There is a need for greater dissemination about the specialty to the lay public and especially to the academic public, who in the future will exercise the profession and will have an active role in patient referrals among colleagues in the health area.
