Abstract

Objective: To describe the epidemiology of congenital syphilis and in pregnant women from 2008 to 2017 in the State of Pará and associate the variables that influenced the transmission process. Methods: Epidemiological, descriptive and retrospective study carried out with data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System registered in the State of Pará, between the years 2008 to 2017. The variables were included according to the information contained in the notification form. For analysis, measures of absolute and relative frequencies and the association of maternal characteristics and congenital infection were used by the X² test. Results: Most pregnant women had received prenatal care, but were only diagnosed at the time of delivery/curettage; the treatments were considered inadequate. Among newborns, the majority (74.42%) had positive peripheral blood tests, CSF tests and x-rays of long bones were mostly not performed; the incidence in the period increased by 183.93% and the maternal variables, schooling and treatment performed, showed a significant association with the increase in cases. Conclusion: The increase in the incidence of congenital syphilis can be an indicator of failures in prenatal care, and the situation indicates the need to implement new measures to reduce cases of congenital syphilis.
