Abstract
Objective: To carry out a narrative review and to reflect on the prevention and control of antimicrobial resistance and the role of nurses in Antimicrobial Stewardship. Bibliographic review: It is estimated that 2.4 million people in Europe, North America and Australia will die from infections caused by multiresistant microorganisms in the next 30 years, impacting public coffers of up to 3.5 billion dollars per year. With this, the Antimicrobial Use Management Program, and the role of the nurse as leadership of the Program stand out, in particular, when addressing the various implications related to the administration of antimicrobials to patients and their care practice. Some of the contributions are reflected in its role as a central communicator of the patient's status, which assesses the effects and possible adverse events related to ATBs during all hours of the shift. Final considerations: The role of nurses becomes fundamental in the Antimicrobial Stewardship, performing numerous essential functions for the success of antimicrobial management. The leadership of this professional contributes to therapeutic optimization, critical analysis of medical prescriptions and adequate administration of antibiotics.
