Abstract

Objective: to identify whether women have already suffered gender prejudice in their medical careers. Methods: This is an exploratory, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. Data collection took place with physicians who worked in the state of Goiás, through a validated questionnaire. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee (CEP). Results: 102 female doctors were interviewed, aged between 20 and 29 years (44.1%), white (62.7%) and who worked in both public and private networks (53.9%). Regarding the level of satisfaction at work, the doctors evaluated it as excellent (40.2%) and good (36.3%), and reported that they had never experienced an episode in which their gender interfered with the performance of their function (76.5%), but they have already had their competence questioned for being a woman (57.8%). The main type of abuse reported was psychological (25.5%) followed by verbal abuse (24.4%) with reports of having already suffered some type of prejudice during graduation (57.8%) and witnessing some type of prejudice within the profession (55.9%). Conclusion: women physicians consider themselves satisfied with their profession. There is, however, gender bias in medicine. Finally, the work is relevant for discussing this topic that is so much experienced in the daily lives of these professionals and yet little evidenced in the literature.
