Abstract

Objective: Characterize the cases of covid-19 in elderly people in Paraíba, in the first year of the pandemic; calculate the probability of survival. Methods: Epidemiological, descriptive and retrospective research, carried out with secondary data from the e-SUS Notifica, collected at the Epidemiological Surveillance Management of the State Department of Health of Paraíba. The 26,924 cases of covid-19 in the elderly, reported from February 2020 to February 2021, were included in this study. Results: Women were more affected, brown people constituted the majority, there was a prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Individuals in the more advanced age groups were more likely to die; being male increased the risk of death by 34%; being of mixed race/color increased by 43%. The estimated survival probability was 98.3% within 30 days of symptoms, 97.6% within 60 days and 96.5% within 120 days. Conclusion: It was possible to identify the epidemiological profile of the elderly affected by covid-19, however, the need to establish actions aimed at mitigating the virus in this public is reinforced.
