Abstract

Objective: To identify in the medical literature positive and negative evidence of available accesses for hemodialysis. Bibliographic review: Regarding the choice of Short-term Catheter (PCC), It is adequate for patients in need of immediate hemodialysis. However, it should be substituted for PermCath or Arteriovenous Fistula (AVF) when possible, as it carries the greatest risk of primary bloodstream infection in cases of extended permanence. As to the Long Permanence Catheter (CLP), consistency is observed when used in patients who are waiting or who do not have previous vessels for the AVF to be performed, however, the CLP presents considerable risks of infection. Finally, regarding the use of AVF, greater safety and durability are evident, in addition to a lower risk of infections, although its early use promotes the possibility of failure and requires multiple interventions. Final considerations: Although the AVF is the option with the lowest risk of infections compared to traditional and long-term catheters, It is concluded that individual and personalized analysis is important to offer the ideal treatment for the patient's moment, considering his health status and present comorbidities.
