Abstract
Objective: To investigate the functional and cognitive repercussions of Chagas disease and its relationship with epidemiological characteristics. Methods: Quantitative cross-sectional analytical epidemiological study carried out with adults being followed up at a specialized outpatient clinic. The Lawton and Katz scales were used to assess functionality, the Geriatric Depression Scale was used to screen for depressive symptoms. To assess cognitive status, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scales and a brief cognitive screening battery were used. Results: The study consisted of 60 patients with CD, the group being divided into: cardiac, digestive, undetermined. Patients in the cardiac (p = 0.043) and undetermined (p = 0.018) groups were more likely to have depressive symptoms. The "cardiac" (p = 0.044) and "digestive" (p = 0.028) groups performed worse on cognitive tests. The cardiac group also performed worse on the verbal fluency test (p = 0.007) and on the clock test (p = 0.001). Conclusion: The results indicate the presence of an association between the clinical manifestations of the disease and worse results in cognitive tests, which was also found in patients with the disease who are prone to depressive symptoms. There was no association between the disease and loss of functionality.
