Abstract
Objective: To analyze corticosteroid-induced diabetes mellitus. Methods: This is an integrative review, through searches in the scientific databases PubMed, BVS and LILACS, where 9 articles were selected in PubMed, 6 articles in VHL, 1 article in LILACS, totaling 16 articles. Results: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease characterized as a heterogeneous group of changes at the metabolic level, which are the result of sustained hyperglycemia, caused mainly by deficits in insulin action, in the secretion of this hormone or, in some situations, of both defects. Thus, diabetes and hypertension were the most frequent cardiometabolic toxicities based on exposure patterns to the various glucocorticoids, according to the underlying disease, whereas inhaled corticosteroids and dispensed inhaled ß-agonists were associated with a higher increased risk of type 1 diabetes after adjusting for other anti-asthmatic medications, asthma, gender, and decade of birth. Final considerations: Therefore, the use of corticosteroids in a wide spectrum of diseases, depending on the dose, exposure time and severity of the underlying disease, can induce the onset of diabetes mellitus.
