Abstract
Objective: To understand the experiences of family caregivers during the illness process of children and adolescents who have died of cancer. Methods: This was a qualitative study in which eight family caregivers of children and adolescents who had died of cancer were interviewed and monitored at a teaching hospital in southern Brazil. The data was submitted to inductive thematic analysis. Results: The results revealed challenges faced from diagnosis to cancer progression and recurrences; negative impacts caused by changes, uncertainties, and limitations during treatment; relationships and communication with health professionals, addressing both positive and negative aspects. Conclusion: The experience of these family caregivers pointed to an arduous path through illness permeated by uncertainties about treatment and prognosis. This highlights the need for resolutive, comprehensive, and quality care for children/adolescents with cancer and their family caregivers. Health professionals must act to provide information and ongoing support to these families, especially in the communication process.
