Abstract
Objective: To carry out a literature review on the risks and benefits of applying alteplase in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Methods: Integrative review, adopting a qualitative and descriptive-exploratory approach. The question was formulated based on the PICO strategy, which helps to identify the essential elements to be considered in the research. Results: Therefore, 10 studies were selected to make up this review. Acute ischemic stroke requires a multidisciplinary and integrated approach. Thrombolytic therapy plays a fundamental role in restoring cerebral blood flow, but its effectiveness is directly related to the time of administration. It is essential that healthcare systems are prepared for rapid diagnosis and treatment. Final considerations: Although alteplase has demonstrated significant benefits in reperfusing compromised brain tissue and improving clinical outcomes, it is essential to consider the risks of bleeding complications, the limited time of administration, the influence of age and stroke severity, as well as the costs involved.
