Abstract

Objective: To identify the profile of premature births occurring in the municipality of São Miguel do Oeste, Santa Catarina. Methods: Cross-sectional, retrospective, descriptive quantitative study, developed from secondary data. The population was composed of newborns, registered in the Information Technology Department of the Unified Health System, born in the municipality of São Miguel do Oeste, Santa Catarina, between 2016 and 2020. Descriptive analysis of the data was applied, with the variables categorized and expressed by relative and absolute frequency. Results: 2,778 newborns took part in the study. Of these, 292 were premature, representing 10.5% of the total births, the majority being moderate and late premature. Among premature newborns, there was a prevalence of females (50.7%), white (84.6%), with low birth weight (55.5%), born by cesarean section (66.8%), with 1st minute Apgar between 8 and 10 (76.7%) and 5th minute between 8 and 10 (94.5%). Conclusion: The need to invest in strategies that expand the coverage and quality of prenatal care is highlighted, as this is a protective factor for prematurity. Furthermore, the importance of deepening studies on the subject is highlighted, with a view to planning and implementing public policies aimed at reducing prematurity and its adverse outcomes.
