Abstract

Objective: To report the experience of medical students in carrying out the “Take Care of Yourself” extension project aimed at promoting self-care for mothers and caregivers of Children with Special Health Needs. Experience report: The project, developed between August and November 2023, included 5 face-to-face meetings in a rehabilitation center located in the city of Belo Horizonte-MG. The methodology used was conversation circles, group dynamics and individual consultations. Topics about self-care, social inclusion, routine organization, among other topics, were discussed. Final considerations: Given the complexity faced by mothers and caregivers regarding the pressure to guarantee the well-being of CSHCN, university extension played a fundamental role in promoting self-care and encouraging the formation of support networks in the community. Based on the work carried out, it was possible to transform the idle time in the waiting room into a moment of learning and interaction between caregivers. Thus, the participants had the opportunity to share similar emotions and experiences, promoting a feeling of belonging and identification between them, as a way of being welcomed and strengthened in the face of group support.
